About the position

Eagle Fish Hatchery is seeking one 8-month temporary Fisheries Technician (benefited) to assist with Sockeye Salmon fish culture and hatchery related activities. Idaho Department of Fish and Game owns and operates Eagle Fish Hatchery as part of the Sockeye Salmon Captive Broodstock Program. Sockeye Salmon are spawned annually to provide eyed eggs to rear in a smolt production program at Springfield Fish Hatchery. A representative group of approximately 1,500 eyed eggs will remain at Eagle FH to be reared to maturity (3 to 4 years). Typically, three year classes of captive broodstock are in culture at Eagle FH.

General Information
Incumbents may be required to travel to remote locations for fish tagging, trapping, spawning or sampling operations. These positions involve walking over rugged terrain and along stream banks; standing and working in cold water for up to eight hours per shift; lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds for short distances; operate four-wheel drive and fish transport vehicles; and working in extreme weather conditions. Incumbents working at fish hatcheries work with toxic chemicals and around heavy dust, high voltage, loud noises, and slippery surfaces. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required. With or without reasonable accommodations, incumbents must be able to stand for long periods of time and safely drive for multiple hours per shift.
Qualifications
Some knowledge of: life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species.
Experience: recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems.
Responsibilities
Weighing fish feed and feeding fish, cleaning and caring for fish rearing vessels, assist in the trapping and transporting anadromous Sockeye Salmon. Sockeye Salmon spawning, egg husbandry, general fish culture, maintaining grounds and equipment, cleaning office and hatchery facilities, maintain hatchery files, data entry, and assisting with annual reports.
